Cantonments Boards are local bodies autonomous in character and are responsible for municipal administration of Cantonment area. Cantonments are constituted under section 12 of the Cantonments Act, 2006. The Kannur Cantonment is located between Kannur town and Kannur City. The St. Angelo Fort is part of the Kannur Cantonment. After Independence, the Kannur Cantonment came under the control of the Indian Army. Today, the Kannur Cantonment is a prominent and strategic location for the Indian armed forces. Cannannore is the old English name for Kannur. The Kannur Cantonment Board is one of the 61 cantonments in India and the only one in Kerala. The Cantonment at Kannur falls in the Class III category. The population of Kannur Cantonment is 4798 as per the census 2011. The Cantonment area is divided into 6 wards. The Cantonment is the headquarters of Defence Security Corps, the place is also known as Burnassery.
